The centenary of the 1916 Salcombe lifeboat disaster falls on 27 October and will be marked by a number of events in Salcombe town.
A special moment will be at 1215hrs, when the current Salcombe lifeboat, Baltic Exchange III, accompanied by the inshore lifeboat, the Joan Bate, will lay a wreath at the Bar near where the disaster took place. It is expected that there will be at least four decommissioned lifeboats also present. Following the laying of the wreath, all the lifeboats will process into Salcombe.
A good place to watch the wreath-laying ceremony will be the coast path. Before the day, two large memorial stones will be erected on the coast path on each side of the Harbour, near the Bar, and each will have a plaque about the disaster.
Earlier in the day, at 1000hrs, the Bishop of Plymouth will lead a service at Holy Trinity, Salcombe, and dedicate a memorial plaque in what will become a permanent lifeboat corner in the church. During this service two maroons will be fired to signify the beginning and end of a one-minute silence. Later Salcombe’s Gospel Choir will sing a version of Crossing the Bar in the presence of about 100 descendants of the 1916 crew.
