Christian Living for a Change
One of the casualties of the take-overs that rocked the publishing world in the late 1980s was Christian journal, which was a direct descendant of both New Christian and New Fire. The publishing house that had previously supported the earlier Christian decided it should be ditched when their operation moved to the States, and for a short while it looked as though Christian would be left high and dry.
The editorial board approached me in 1991 with the request that rather than let Christian disappear, I should take on the editorship and relaunch it as an independent journal. Although I had worked with Christopher Bryant on New Fire, it was still with some trepidation that I agreed to do so.
Despite challenges and difficulties, all went amazingly well, and over the next seven years I produced 27 issues of Christian, before handing over the editorship in 1998. Practically all the major Christian thinkers and writers of the 1990s were represented in this journal, which developed a strong and committed readership. Read more about the birth and development of Christian here.
Christian was an ecumenical journal committed to both Christian action and spirituality. It was short, accessible and to the point; and reached many people who would otherwise have felt isolated in their faith journey. By including good contemporary poetry in each issue, it was also a platform for many poets who might otherwise have been unread by most people in the churches.
Issues of Christian are available for sale, for £1.50 including postage and package. Complete bound sets can also be supplied to libraries, for the price of £100. The easiest way to purchase them is to contact me so that I can send you details to pay by bank transfer and you can send me your address.
